Hi!

I totally understand why so many people are upset and mad at Sony. But there are a couple of points in that "Why?" list that I simply cannot agree with.

1) They are claiming that Sony is transmitting credit card information "in plain text every time someone signs into PSN". As far as I can tell the only time the whole credit card details are sent to PSN is when user either adds a new credit card or edits his/her credit card information via Account Management. After that all the credit card information is stored solely on PSN servers and even the legitimate PSN account owner cannot see the full details of his/her card.

And about that plain text... Yes, it's totally possible that the information is sent in plain text under the actual SSL encryption. Having the original firmware in one's PS3 there should be absolutely no reason that PSN connection would be in any way less reliable or less secure than any web service running on https and using SSL.

2) They are claiming that innocent people can get banned because some hacker has forged his/her PS3's console ID. In my opinion this is just scare tactics and based purely on rumours and hearsay. Even though it is possible to change the console ID and MAC address, I haven't seen any proof that one could spoof the actual PSN account. So the chances that someone would have faked

a) your console ID
b) your PS3 MAC address
c) your PSN account and
d) God-knows-what

are pretty much next to nothing.

Could you please verify (or debunk) these claims? I haven't seen anything that would support these claims, quite the opposite. I think you have all the skills and know-how to pull this off. (Hmm, I just realised that you said you haven't ever signed into PSN. But theoretically speaking, do you think these claims are real or just plain BS and FUD?)

Thank you and good luck! I really hope justice will prevail and you will walk away scot-free!

PS. You have amazing rapping skills. Really. :)

Tuomas. You do realize that encryption is used for a reason even in the case of a secure protocol (https). When you send your credit information over to the PSN server to be billed by Sony anyone with access to the servers or database can quite literally simply write down your information and commit credit fraud online. You act like Sony is only capable of employing honest people. Do you realize how many people could have credit fraud being used against them RIGHT NOW because of Sony's irresponsible lazy programming, because of one dishonest server tech amongst the unknown amount that are currently employed? This is a huge deal if it can be proven and i guarantee that they need to be investigated by the proper authorities into the matter.

40,000,000 systems sold, 40,000,000 possible credit cards not encrypted. You always encrypt because even if its "secure" there is always way to break the "unbreakable". (ps3)

Geohot as well as MANY other DEV's really do deserve our thanks and occasionally our help when truly needed. These guys (and gals) bring to light security issues, holes and problems that the big companies get careless about and ignore when it comes to our private info, cc info and security. There are many people out there that blame the DEV's and hackers for the problems but the problem is the companies like Sony, who have ignored the security issues with there products with no regard to customer security and information safety. Everyone of us deserve to feel confident that the products we buy are safe, secure and as a paying customer not have things taken from us AFTER we pay for them. I personally do NOT agree with piracy but I agree 100% with homebrew as this adds functionality and features to a product that we paid for and leads to future innovation. A perfect example is the original apple tv, apples "hobby" with lackluster features modded to a fully functional mediacenter. This is MY personal 2 cents and as an added thank you for all the hard work these guys do, I'm going to donate $69.99 (the cost of a Sony game) to Geohot. I know its not much but it's what I can give.........CMPTRBLDER

You will pay harder for that George, i can guarantee you. You did a very very very stupid, immature and childish action. rogerdodger91: I hear you but like Carl Sagan said: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." I'm not saying what you or this anonymous hacker (behind the "Call of Privacy: Modern Spyware By PlayStation Network" document) said is not true. I'm just a sceptic and need to be convinced. So please, make me a believer. Bring out some undisputed evidence. So far there have been zero confirmed cases of credit card information being stolen due to way PSN and/or PS3 work or normal retail consoles getting banned because a hacked console is using the same console ID. Even if the information is transmitted in plain text (under the SSL encryption) does not mean that it is being stored without any encryption or hashing. (Of course I don't know how Sony is storing PSN information but the burden of proof lies on the hacking community at this moment.)

And this is definitely not a new thing. PSN has been running for nearly 4,5 years and yet there is absolutely nothing that would back the claim about users' confidential information being leaked or their credit cards being misused. The original "Call of Privacy: Modern Spyware By PlayStation Network" document even claims that in the early days of PSN everything was transmitted with standard http without any encryption. Shouldn't there have been tons of credit card frauds at that time?

I'd like to see proof of that also even though I think it will be extremely difficult. Why? Because we no longer have the PSN of year 2006 and a PS3 with some 1.xx firmware wouldn't be able to access the current PSN anyway. But once again this is just another extraordinary claim without any concrete proof or evidence.

And the logic behind "hacking should be allowed because Internet/Windows/whatnot was made by hackers" is flawed. It's pretty much like the old joke: "All men are mortal. Aristotle is a man. Therefore all men are Aristotle." Just installing a custom firmware doesn't make you a great hacker and the creator of The Next Big Thing. Only very few and very exceptional people will be the next "geohots" or "kevinmitnicks". I'm not saying that hacking is bad and CFW should be illegal. No, not at all. Homebrew community can bring out really fantastic stuff and breathe life into devices left unsupported by their makers. But currently most of these so-called "hackers" only seek ways to run illegal copies of retail games on their consoles and do all kinds of nasty tricks (faking Trophies, ruining online multiplayer games with wallhacks and aimbots etc). People using CFW only for backups of their legally owned games is a very small minority. In my humble opinion Sony should just drop all the law suits and concentrate on banning consoles running pirate software and/or online hacks.

Blogger Tuomas said...

Just for the fun of it, let's run these claims once more through the so-called Baloney Detection Kit (ref. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUB4j0n2UDU)

1. How reliable is the source of the claim?

The claims originate from the document published by an anonymous hacker with no previous history or reliability. So I think this one falls into category of "plausible but not very reliable".

2. Does the source make similar claims?

See point 1. So let's leave this one as undetermined.

3. Have the claims been verified by somebody else?

As far as I know, no. I've been following for example marcan42's, Mathieulh's and KaKaRoToKS's tweets but nothing that could be classified as verification hasn't been published yet.

4. Does this fit with the way the world works?

Not really. Both the https and SSL are commonly used methods in Internet. Yes, they are somewhat vulnerable for Man-in-the-middle attacks but user running on original PS3 firmware should have nothing to be afraid of.

Besides Sony is not the only company having millions of credit cards stored in their system. Let's take iTunes for an example. When I a buy something from iTunes or from App Store, I don't need to give out my CC details upon every purchase. Why? Because everything is stored within Apple servers and all I need is to enter my iTunes account's password. The same goes for PSN and PlayStation Store. So why would PS3 send user's address, CC details etc. on every single login? It just does not make any sense and does not fit with the way the world works.

5. Has anyone tried to disprove the claim?

Yes. For example well respected tech site Ars Technica updated their story (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/02/report-psn-hacked-showing-stunning-lack-of-credit-card-security.ars) very soon after the news broke out. Their conclusion was the same as mine: "... the claims originally made by the hacker quoted in the article are unsubstantiated." See also the comment by DigitalMan on page 3 of comments (http://tinyurl.com/isPSNsecureornot).

6. Where does the preponderance of evidence point?

So far no one has either verified or totally debunked the claims so I call this one a tie.

7. Is the claimant playing by the rules of science?

In a sense, yes. The method used by this anonymous hacker is pretty similar to common method of accessing PSN with v3.55 firmware using faked CA root certificates and a suitable DNS or proxy. In theory one could make a custom firmware that captures user's PSN data but there are no signs of such malicious firmware, at least not yet. And even if such firmware existed, user has to download and install it all by himself, e.g. it won't automatically creep into people's PS3s. If you install a shady CFW in my opinion you should also accept the risks and not blame Sony.

To be continued in next comment...

February 20, 2011 at 6:42 AM
Blogger Tuomas said...

8. Is the claimant providing positive evidence?

Some. He/she does not disclose his/her methods but the document contains (dummy) credit card information that is claimed to be sent from his/her PS3 upon every login. But this needs to be confirmed by other parties too.

However changing PS3's console ID has been possible since last November (ref. http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/%5Bps3-src%5D-psidpatch-1-0-a-70709/) and yet there haven't been cases of consoles being banned due to forged ID. Actually they even admitted that just changing the ID won't get the console un-banned. So why would it work the other way round?

9. Does the new theory account for as many phenomena as the old theory?

No. There have been countless cases where people have lost their PSN account via different kinds of scams; PSN chain letters, fake "free PSN prepaid cards here, enter your PSN account and password" sites etc. But even in these cases no-one's credit card information has really been compromised. Yes, someone could have bought stuff from PlayStation Store with your account but that's it. There is no way to get the all the credit card details so they could be used for other immoral or even criminal acts.

10. Are personal beliefs driving the claim?

All signs point to yes. People behind this Operation Boycott Sony seem to be very anti-Sony and have all the motives the spread FUD.

So in total I'd say these claims score pretty high in "baloney" category. Feel free to disagree. This is not about trying to prove that aliens are real or there's a big conspiracy behind 9/11. This is mostly technical stuff and anyone with enough skill and motivation should be able recreate the circumstances.

I'm an open-minded guy and I have no problem changing my views if there is enough solid evidence. So please, show us for example a video where an unmodified PS3 with legit firmware gets banned due to faked console ID on a PS3 running on CFW or what kind of information is sent when a user logs into PSN.

PS. Sorry for this huge wall of text. :)

I HACKINTOSH on one system because i OWN a MACpro and genuine software.

I JAILBREAK because I have bought taxed paid for and OWN every single IPHONE product since launch.

I OWN them so i will do what the HELL i like with them!!!

If i had a ps3 i'd do the same!!

BUT

since this case..... ive sold my SONY VAIO and any SONY product AND instead bought a MAC to go with my IPHONEs!!
(yes i know in ways apple tried and still try to do the same as sony.. but lets face it.. they are nice products!!

sony could have sold more consoles, if they backed jailbreaking and opening up theyre system more, as its more appealing to people. thats why i went iphone after iphone only for the jailbreak and system tweaks to enhance an already great product to its max!!

Okay drama queens lets look at this logically for once. It is blatantly obvious that some of you have no idea what you are talking about. One, the only thing GeoHot did was provide a way to run homebrew apps on a PS3 and he posted how to do it on the internet, that is all. Some of you act like he created a virus that is killing off PS3 consoles or something, chill, really. This hack in no way allows you to pirate anything, he didn't make any pirated software available for the PS3 and he didn't post anything about hacking online games. Had this been a known crime I am sure GeoHot would not have made this available to the public. Two, what he did with the PS3 and the jailbreak for the iPhone is no different at all. He wasn't thrown in jail for the iPhone jailbreaking stuff so it would only seem logical that he thought this was okay to do as well. Three, you say he opened the door for malicious activity, so if that is the case then just about all of the people on hack-a-day.com and other sights and myself need to be sued, arrested and thrown in jail. There are hacks for the ECU's in cars that provide a way to load custom firmwares on them but I don't see the car companies going after these people and these things are all over the internet. The reason why is the car companies look at it as a way to sell more cars, which is the way Sony should be looking at this situation. GeoHot didn't open the door, the door is already open with software, it is just a matter of finding it. If GeoHot didn't do it some one else would and has already, that is just a fact. I agree with some of the other posters that said that Sony could have at least contacted GeoHot first and asked him to remove the hack from the internet and I am sure that he would have. A better way to handle this would have been to take Microsoft's approach with the Win7 phone hackers. These companies like Sony that some how think they can stop hacking of their hardware completely are sadly mistaken, software\hardware will ALWAYS be hackable and will be hacked no matter what you do unless you wipe out the human race, a company like Sony should know this. Sony the tighter you make your grip the more will slip through your fingers, you can't defeat them so work with them. If I created a piece of hardware and someone hacked it and made it do something that I didn't design it to do and they posted it online and it got really popular, I would be like awesome! I would contact that person and pick their brain about some ideas. I would pay them some money and work with them to create a custom firmware that would help me sell more units, that is a win win situation. This slamming young people for being curious and experimenting and using their brain for once will get you no where, I mean he could be on the streets selling drugs to kids or something. He isn't a criminal for crying out loud, he is just like any other coder like myself who is curious and enjoys making things do stuff they are not intended to do, that is not a crime in itself. It is like the cities that don't let the skaters skate anywhere at all and arrest them every time they see them skating. Does this work? The answer is no, Are these people hardened criminals? The answer is no again. What you do is get with them and get their ideas on a design for a skate park and build a park where they can skate. Bottom line is GeoHot is not backing up piracy or any other illegal activity and there are better ways for big companies like Sony to handle this situation. I hope you win GeoHot because if Sony wins we will start seeing even more of these types of suits except worse and more ridiculous. Before you people go jumping on your high horse get the facts straight will ya....

David, the iphone doesn't rely on easily pirated software to survive. You obviously don't know what providing what this guy did to hackers does to this industry. Why don't you go and read up on how developers survive and get paid, then read up on how ripple effects work. Then we'll talk.

Brandon I didn't say the iPhone did survive on easily pirated software to survive, in fact I mentioned nothing about the survival of the iPhone??? I know how developers survive and get paid, they survive and get paid just like the rest of us, I have been writing software over 25 years, I am well aware how this works. I also know how the ripple effect works, none of this has anything to do with what I said. GeoHot didn't provide anything to hackers that someone else wouldn't have if he didn't, not to mention the "hackers" would have done it themselves. The fact remains he did nothing wrong, what others do with it may be wrong and that would not be his fault. If GeoHot is in the wrong then what you are saying is, is that pencils misspell words or guns kill people. People misspell words and people kill people. What people decide to do with this is their fault. If I was to start drowning people in public swimming pools should all public pools be sued and brought to justice because the pool is publicly available and now people saw how I drowned others, of course not, it is not their fault. Think people think....

Actually I support Geohot... He really hasn't ever released or said anything about playing "pirated games on your PS3 without paying them"... Loading homebrew and doind as you want without doing anything illegal, is obviously your right because you have buyed the system... Sony is just bullying and trying to terrify hackers. We all know that they are some greeedy bastards and by denying it is stupid. They want to milk as much money as they can from us no matter the way...

Justice 4 Geohot - don't buy Sony products, bought the t-shirt and have donated already. Not mainly because he is the sole reason for me owning (read: wanting) an iPhone as he released the JB to free it, but also because if Sony wins it will set a precedent that MUST NOT prevail for the sake of ALL CONSUMERS across product lines.

We cannot afford to have Geohot lose this case. Please read his blog, gather info, make up your mind and you should come to ONE conclusion = donate whatever little or much you can! Anything else is fascist in its deepest sense.
They say jump, what do you say?

The first one to create a gun, is the first one that allows the option to shoot someone. Period. Even if someone else will eventually make the gun, it's a moral choice.

@Brandon

And the first one to create a toothpick is the first one that allows the option to poke someones eye out and the first one to create toilet paper is the first one that allows the option to choke a baby and the first one to create a swimming pool is the first one that allows the option to drowned someone....I could go on forever and ever and say this about everything that has been made by man and things that are not, what is your point? The person who made the object is not responsible for someone else's choice when using the object ,people are responsible for their own choices. Period., welcome to reality. So how convenient for you, apparently you can blame your every action on someone else's "moral choice".....

I'm sorry I can;t start boycotting Sony now. I already started doing that when they removed OtherOS.

Now instead of a Sony TV and and a second PS3 for my bedroom I have a nice bigscreen LG with a LG blu-ray player. No gaming from my bed is a small sacrifice compared to not giving Sony my money.

I bought a p$3 a few weeks ago. After reading this post I decided to return it to the retail store. I'm not gonna say where, but I'll give you guys a hint, it has a big red logo that looks like a target. I plan on buying a used one that doesn't directly support $ony's war machine.

Last thing i bought from Sony was an old school walkman when i was a teenager. Fuck you Sony. I was literally going to pick up a Ps3 for me and my son when i heard the news. Instead we bought the kinect from Microsoft. There actually hiring people who hack their products which is what you should have done with Geohot. Now you look like assclowns and Geohot will still hack everything he can get his hands on, even after this ridiculous lawsuit is over.
