graf_chokolo

As many of you already know, 2 days ago his house was raided by the German police. Talk about a guy who clearly had no involvement at all with piracy, cheating, or the things Sony claims to care about. Do you want to know what he has that enrages the suits at Sony so much? Talent.

Some people call me immature, and you know what, they are probably right. Some call me stubborn, and they are right too. But this pales grossly in comparison to Sony, who is so butthurt over the PS3 being hacked they they are blinded by rage and incompetence.

A question, how many people do you think knew or cared on January 10 about all this? Maybe a couple hundred thousand? Under a percent of your market share. And these are geeks, who frankly aren't going to change their content purchasing habits based on the news. These are the kind of people who really are hacking their PS3 just for the sake of doing it, just cause it's cool. The kind of people who are telling you the truth when they say they really did just hack their PS3 to run Linux. Or they are diehard pirates who never would have bought the games anyway, you know the type.

Now fast forward to February 25. Consistently, the top Sony related news article is about the PS3 being hacked. And the causal gamer comes along and sees, oh cool, the PS3 has been hacked, now I don't have to buy games. With a few google searches, they come across stuff that I or graf_chokolo had nothing at all to do with. They install it and hit the torrent sites. Hell, I was on a political news show last night, you think those people ever would have heard about this?

Just imagine what the third party devs are thinking. The PS3 is hacked forever and Sony can't do anything but fire away at scapegoats. Great confidence boost.

This grand show against people who aren't even pirates has to be one of the worst corporate moves in recent history, perhaps even as dumb as the rootkit fiasco. Your competition fixes the problem technically and moves on. They want it to stay quiet. And as far as sending a message to "evil" hackers goes, it really isn't working. Just read the writings of graf_chokolo.

And I quote "SONY wants about 750.000 euros from me if i don’t cooperate They don’t know me at all I don’t care about it and they might double it The higher is the sum the higher gets my motivation They don’t understand what makes me tick. Money and even my life doesn’t mean to me very much without knowledge. I have a scientific mind and the knowledge is food to my brain."

They'll never understand people like us. They are scared, as they rightfully should be. We built your PS3. We built this world. We are not mindless consumers. It is us with the brains and curiosity, not you with the guns, jails, suits, titles, and dollars. And the truth is, if all of you disappeared tomorrow, the world would continue on fine. Good luck surviving without people like graf_chokolo.

Nicely said! Even though we are hackers, and fiddle with a lot of things, our fiddling has created more secure technology and very good ideas. Sony seems to be attacking any hacker to instill fear in the Hacking community. However Sony's plan has backfired on them instead of fear and the stopping of Hacks they are seeing anger and more hacks. I have a feeling they will soon be taking even more drastic measures soon. But! We'll fight right back!

well i wouldn't worry too much about it. scare tactic, publicity, its what the main thing is. but will the customer be wanting to go with sony seeing this? same say any publicity is good publicity, but what it reveals is a different story. we the people who build their systems in development could very well just refuse out right. (maybe get sued) maybe knowing that they can get out of business by this might change their ways. somehow i doubt it but, current events will tell when it will happen and how. if at all.

there will be change, no doubt.

I would just like to say to you George, I think you did a great job, and i fully believe when we pay so much for the hardware, that we should be able to do anything with it.
I wish I could help you and the hackers community out, I could offer cheap hosting or something, lol.
Your idea of running home-brew to enhance the PS3 system, Is a top notch.
I truly hope that you see this case to the end, and fight Sony the whole way, (Japanese always get there own way!).
On another note, if they can not be fought, maybe they could be rivaled......
Great work GeoHot. Keep it going!
To those who understand what you where trying to do, we will back you.

All you're doing is spreading propaganda. The reason they removed OtherOS support was to close an open door to intruders such as you. Your means are fair, but you cannot justify the damage that will be caused by what you are doing.
You claim it's your console to do with whatever you wish even if you're told not to. On that same logic if I buy a cutlery set, I should have the right to go and cut someone up if I so desire.

The vast majority of you people may not be pirates, but a small group of pirates will have a far more noticeable negative impact than you do-gooders positive impact.
As you've previously stated they're pursuing you for their lost credibility, which is justifiable. You have potentially cost them millions of dollars of revenue.

In short, this is not about preventing people from being free, this is about protecting the people who paid good money for these consoles. Sony is not evil, they are a corporation, their image is an extremely important asset to them. You cannot EVER say that they are not being fair to their customers when they have been more fair than you can comprehend. Did you know that they made a deficit of nearly two billion dollars because they sold their consoles for a lot less than they were producing them for?

Make a deal with them before they tear you apart, because they can and will, with the support of the vast majority of the industry and the gamers.

You know what you should try? Getting some knowledge of what the fuck you're blabbering about, cos to me, and anyone else who knows worth a damn, you sound like a fool. This isn't about Geo or hacking, PSN or even the PS3. It's about our rights as consumers. Maybe you're content to bend over backwards and spread your ass for Sony or which ever company to fuck you over while dictating what you are able to do with the product YOU purchased, but I'm not. What I buy is mine and I'll be damned before I let a corporation tell me what to do. Fuck them.

PS Idiot, no one is tearing anyone apart, it's a civil suit. Geo IS protecting people who bought the console. If you buy a car, would you want the company dictating what fuel you put into it, or what music you listen to in it? It's the exact same thing.

@fitzpatrickjames
you've missed a point there
yes if i own a cutlery set it doesn't give me the right to stab someone.
stabbing someone is illegal
jailbreaking (under the dmca) on the other hand is not:
http://www.internetnews.com/mobility/article.php/3895126/DMCA-Ruling-Allows-iPhone-Jailbreaks.htm
so it's more like owning a cutlery set and melting it down
it might be against the wishes of the company and not what it was intended for but it's not illegal and it's your choice.

george didn't not make running pirated games possible if fact specifically addded code to try and prevent it (as stated in the interview) the first person to modify george's code and create the first backup manager for the ps3: broke the law, all the users that uploaded copies of games (and still do) to torrent sites: are breaking the law, the people who download the games instead of going out and buying them: are breaking the law and all the cheaters that added patches to their ps3's to allow them to cheat in online games : broke the terms of service. these are the people sony should be suing buy sony are only going after geohot because he is the most famous person on the sony hacking scene and taking him down will potentially cause the biggest ripple affect among the ps3 hacking community to try and discourage other people from coming up with ways to steal from sony.

February 25, 2011 at 9:43 PM
Blogger Reala said...

@fitzpatrickjames

Your analogy fails. If you use your cutlery set to stab someone, that's your choice, and you and you alone should face the consequences. It does not mean everyone who owns the same cutlery set should be punished. And it certainly does not mean the company that makes the cutlery set should be sued.

See the logic there? Geohot is the maker of the cutlery set, and anybody can use his tools to do what they want. However, the only people that should be punished are the people who used it to kill people (the pirates).

@ The Watcher, Your use of profanity just makes your point less credible, but I would have to have read it first.

@ Duds, You're right in one respect, but it indeed still illegal to jailbreak gaming consoles. He may not have made pirating possible, but he opened the door to it, that's what I tried to convey. his actions are directly linked to the pirating of the console. Also, yes they are going after GeoHot because he is the figurehead of the whole fiasco. If he had the intelligence to be secretive instead of basking in fame, it wouldn't be him. But yes, they were always going to get someone. You're a smart person, your points are valid, I agree.

@ Reala, Okay, I see my simple example was not enough to fit the situation, but it got the point across.
Let's say a guy get's a microwave and modifies it to act as a EMP device for his own ends whatever they may be. Someone else comes along and uses the designs he published to make a weapon with much larger potential.
The person who modified in the first place deserves to be punished for opening the floodgates for destruction.

I know George is fighting for freedom, but this point I will make is important when you buy this console you effectively AGREE TO TERMS OF SERVICE. These are legally binding, and anyone who bought a PS3 agreed not to mess about with the software.

you should really look at what this case is about. it has nothing to do with Sony or the PS3 or gaming in general. This case is, at it's core, about consumer rights and what you can do with things you legally purchase. That's bigger than Hotz, you, me, Sony, and everything else you comment on. It also deserves our support, as it's outcome will stretch from game consoles to personal computers. Fitzpatrick I don't believe you understand logic at all. How is modifying a firmware or operating system comparable to murder, apples and oranges friend apples and oranges. When I buy a linksys router and turn it into a drone should cisco come after me unathorized use? When I buy a pc and modify the windows installation and run a new shell or run a entirely new os on that machine should the pc manufacturer have cause to raid me? If I run a new os on a netbook, smart phone, or modify them to reduce certain restrictions should I be sued? Your so called logic fails you.

When I was in school I put up with crap from people/teachers just like you who. Thought if it's computer or electronics related and they can't understand what you are doing it must be wrong. I don't like labels and I don't see myself as this or that, I'm a person with a natural sense of curiosity. I like learning how things work, how they can be modified and changed. I just like learning for the sake of understanding and then move onto something new to learn. To me when people look down on others like myself it says you shouldn't want to learn you should be happy as a wage slave, be content with working... Sleeping... Consuming... Eating, be a mindless worker and it will be okay. It reminds me of when bill hicks talked about reading a book in a backwards diner and a person asked whatchya reading for? To me it sends a message of willing oppression of the mind and that there really are those who would seek to keep people intellectually enslaved.

It's stunning how much Kool-Aid is being drunk by the Sony fanboys. The rabid attacks on Geohot for "cheaters on MW2" and "piracy" just shows how uninformed some people are. Geohot didn't invent piracy. Neither did P2P, DeCSS, VHS, BetaMax, cassettes, photocopiers, etc. He didn't open the door for it. It's been around for a long time (even on the PS3). The fanboys only started hearing about it when Sony started talking about it like it's the boogie man out to get everyone. As others have said, this is about consumer rights, fair use, and to an extent, freedom of speech.

Imagine if Sony wins this case and the OtherOS class-action suit - Want to watch that anti-Sony documentary? Nope. When you purchased your TV you entered into an agreement with Sony that you would allow them to filter content. Want to watch that new Blu-Ray movie. Too bad? It poses a security threat and Sony has blocked it from playing on the device. You like that picture-in-picture function. I'm sorry, the warranty has run out and Sony no longer needs to support that feature. You'll have to give it up in the new firmware patch. You can choose to keep it, and give up color on the tv.

Point being is we paid for it. We should be able to modify it! If someone takes an idea and uses it for evil. It is on them. If there currently cheating going on in games then it a poorly piece of written software. There plenty of games out there that don't have these issues.

Blizzard would be a prime example of a company that innovated to stop cheating.

Geohot: Don't blame me for PSN cheats, gimme some money

George "Geohot" Hotz has become something of a celebrity for his part in the cracking and distribution of the PlayStation 3's security code. Thanks to him, many hackers have torn their PS3s apart, and not all of them have done so with noble goals. Hotz, however, accepts no responsibility for nefarious activities in online games.

He did, however, seem to back up Sony's decision to ban cheaters from the PlayStation Network. Either that, or he backs the cheaters themselves. His writing doesn't make it entirely clear.

PS3 Hack Ruins Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer

The much publicized hack of the PlayStation 3 by George Hotz, already in the court system, is gaining a foot hold amongst the mainstream. Modern Warfare 2 has become a hot zone of rampant cheating and hacking, leading to unplayable games, accounts being reset, and more. It’s not difficult to do anymore either as videos have popped up online showing kids performing absurd feats in-game.

Infinity Ward blames the recent crack, Robert Bowling responding with this quote:

“Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they’re played on, therefore; updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem, unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform.”

That seems partially correct. No doubt the issue has reached catastrophic levels in recent days, the cheats and hacks more easily accessible than ever. Can anyone actually say though the issues weren’t there beforehand? How many messages did you get offering to rank you up for only $10? Those were hacked lobbies, and they existed (and still do) cross-platform. What was the response to those? Nothing. Ever look at the leaderboards? Million to one kill to death ratios dominate.

To state the current wave of games causing the problem is on Sony, yes, that’s understood. To say Activision/Infinity Ward is clean in this matter? That doesn’t sound right.

I think people need to take a step out of their game obsessed lives and think about the issues here. It's easy to say 'My gaming experiance is wrecked, fuck the hackers' but really the issue of hacking (and piracy for that matter), should be solved /properly/, not by limiting users, but by fighting the problems directly. Look at PC games. I don't game a whole lot but hacking does not seem to be a major issue, and is modifying a PC really that hard? Games themselves fight the problem and deal with it quite successfully - without PC users being limited. Sony should really grow a set and fight what it is they claim to not like, rather than trying to take the easy option and control their whole system.

Like I said A lot of people are reading this and is reading the SCEA.
I have to say that both Sides have Valid points but the SCEA is the one in the wrong here.
I ran the jailbreak for about a min then updated to the 3.56 patch because after looking over what he did I found there was nothing wrong with his jailbreak as it was nothing more then a means to add otheros back into the mix.
But since updating to the 5.56 OFW patch and with the recent changes to the TOS I have not touched my PS3 even to play my already own games.
I am doing this because of fear of the Root-kits found built into this recent Firmware update and they wanting me to accept a new TOS which will allow them to have access to everything connected to my PS3 be it a USB, a controller, External HDD, Media Center and WIFI Connection Which I Feel is a breach in to my Privacy.
I feel that they have no right to snoop around my computers network which will also allow others if they find a exploit to do the same.
I also I do not want some pedophile over on SCEA having access to picture of my son and future child which is due in October doing some sick shit because the company they work for gave them power over access anything on my network.

Geohot, I just want to say that I'm a script kiddie (like most people who call themselves "hackers") and I REALLY appreciate your work on the PS3 console.
i honestly hope anyone who doesn't appreciate your work ends up with an inception-style railroad death.

i can only respect people that will admit that they aren't really "hackers" but script kiddies.

if you don't like geohot or his work on the PS3. simply uninstall any homebrew, pirated games, "challenge lobby" patches, etc. because he made most of it possible.

Insayne stop pretending to support George then declare that you pirate and George made pirating and cheating possible. If you are pirating you are not a true supporter of what George is promoting. George does not advocate nor like pirating. Most devs/coders do not like pirating because they would like something they worked hard on stolen (if and when that product is for sale). Obviously I believe pirating is not near the issue people behind DRM want people to believe, but that is to be understood as they too have a product to sell to companies. I can give so many examples of why piracy is not the issue people believe it is, whether it be music, movies, games..etc But it wont matter as people will still continue to say it's the reason sales are down for most media. It's simply just not the case, I don't like nor support it myself but using fear to force a consensus to place even further restrictions on the people who do not steal is wrong.

If sony in fact was actually worried about theft they should undoubtedly consider going after the people who are pirating. However since they are not it stands to reason they too understand it's a minor blip. They are just trying to save face/pride or whatever it is they feel they have lost when being shown they were not as secure as they thought they were and perhaps just maybe they shouldn't go around saying their system is unhackable because it initiates a challenge to those who are talented, even if it just to see if the claims of superiority are founded on facts.

people are real faggots when they think that hacking is purely for piracy and cheating. hackers reason and your reason are 2 different things. people like false and those other idiots lacking a brain cell need to STFU and think about the situation as a whole and what the effects are. think sony should win? if so then our statue of liberty might as well be taken down and replaced with a statue of some fat guy with a suit and whip that represents total company control over citizens and customers.

The MW2 issue was IW's fault, the hack was in the wild for ages. You only needed 2 PS3's and Sonys Data Transfer Utility.

Keep up the good work, I hope more anon's pop up in the scene to protect their identitys.

This is cute, and all, but, since the PS3 was hacked, why have only pirate programs been released for it?

Hackers would be a lot easier to defend and understand if 90% of the shit the released wasn't illegal.

Geohot, keep up the fight brother. In the end WE know the truth about Sony Corporation. They are criminals, period. As far as they are concerned, THEY own the rights to CONTROL our electronic devices.. They scary thing is that as more and more devices become web-enabled, this will only get worse. The MANDATORY (but not) firmware updates will continue, and the sheep consumer will obey. Those with intellect, see through this facade by the Sony Corporation Army of Fear Mongers. The truth is that "Hackers" run the world.

Corporations like Sony will never cease to amaze me in the way that they think. The fundamental reason things like this happen is because they don't understand hackers needs. There are two approaches to dealing with hackers and two mega corporations have taken these two approaches.

For example when Sony created the PS3 it was hail as one of the most amazing platforms of its times, and it remained that way until it got hacked to which Sony took the approach to ban and try to stop hacks, whereas Microsoft must of keenly observed this when they were developing "Project Netal" now known as the Kinect and they thought that instead of fighting hackers they said let their imagination thrive on this revolutionary device, this is precisely the reason why there aren't any DRM on the Kinect. That is the reason why microsoft is about to release a SDK for the Kinect. They want to develop beyond the measured they had ever thought could be possible. This can be said for Windows Phone OS.

Sony just note one thing "Devices in lockdown isn't the way of the future" Microsoft figured it out why can't you?

Actually, there is no jailbreak app released explicitly for pirating. There is a backup app released that is a legal program(you have the legal right to backup your purchases). How this legal program gets used is up to the user. That's really the only thing I can think of that could be considered a "pirate program".

Okay guys... if you're blaming online cheating and piracy on Geohot, you're not thinking correctly.

Even if what he did made it closer to possible, it is still the responsibility of every individual consumer to not pirate things and to not cheat. It is not his responsibility.

And sure, maybe George has an ego. But that is not the fucking point of this all. Even if you don't like someone's personality, at least be fair to them.

Also, it's Sony's responsibility to stop cheaters in online games. Not George's. You should cry to Sony to hire George to stop people from cheating online, because he would know how to do it.
