What a collection of douchebags they got in the corporate offices.
I worked closely (and went out drinking one night) with their VP over laptops/mobile computing an AGE ago and he was cool. Nothing like the dbags that run it now.
Seriously, I'm starting to wonder this very deeply. Is it possible that this geohot suing thing and going after Graf_Chokolo is all because their is something in that PS3 that shouldn't be found. Like, I'm starting to think that something in that PS3 has done a deep infringement or something even worst, because why hasn't Sony hit dark Alex as and the whole psp scene. They said "psp? Oh well, who cares". This seems to go farther than we know, because it seems weird that Sony is putting so much effort into closing this system. Even more effort than Apple and their idevices. Something tells me that a hacker is going to find something really big that's going to damage Sony in a big way. I say we found out what it is.
I don't think so. One could say the reason Sony is really sue-happy was because of how hard piracy hit the PSP that even Sony couldn't predict to the point that Sony even issued a informal survey asking why people choose to hack their PSPs.
Hey George, I have a question - maybe for everyone? Am I just naive or doesn't the game developers have a say in these bans for jailbreaking that Sony are doing at the moment? Aren't those game developers / publishers missing out on a lot of DLC cash etc.? Regards, Daniel
the devs have no say in sony's services. but they could have their own, or use gamespy servers. gamespy dony ban on hacks. just cheats and piracy( atleast on pc. that was all gotten away with on bqttlefront rs for the psp.
its not cheap. just cause it had no RSX access doesn't mean it sucks. it still had almost full use of the CPU, and that was enough for hackers to do their thing (without having hack). you see, they used otherOS for other things and processing, and creating programs, as well as playing ps3 game and playing online, both sony says you cant have both, which is why it was hacked.
having otherOS made hackers very much happy. which is why the 4-5 years it wasn't hacked, remain unhackble. but now, well, they might as well held up a red blanket for a bull.
also, pirating on a DS is much easier then a PSP, so the amount of games released is moot. all you need for a DS is a flash cart and boom. a psp, mad you have to exploit, install CFW then run a patch, or use a pandora.
Xavis75211: not entirely. with some games it's as simple as place on MS>play on PSP and no CFW needed.(there's at least 1 angry birds eboot out there that runs on ofw) and now with the signed HENs it's a lot easier to hack psp for homebrew or piracy.
BEFORE PS3 HACK PSP = Jigkick battery + magic memory stick (but it hacks permanently) to play homebrew, you simply put it on the memory stick through USB mode then play.
DS = flash card (R4, AceKard) + micro SD (must be used on every boot for homebrew) to load homebrew, you put the game on the micro SD and put it on the DS
Geohot you really got to work and enter the real world :)
You still AR in a denial stage! wat you did is illegal! You had shared the hack to the entire world, You cant share this at the world that was for you're own private use only.
Why didn't Sony sue Dark_Alex? Not in the U.S. and they couldn't find him. He left the scene due to haters and boredom. I had a programmable Atari 2600 cart back int the day so piracy is nothing new, just more widespread. Why? Publicity! As far as MW2 cheaters running rampant, I blame SONY!! Why? most of the hackers there which generally make up a small group of players are there mostly due to publicity. 99.9% of hackers are doing it for the challenge or just to remove limitations, not to cheat or pirate. Those are side-effects. You publicize a hack and you make the problem worse all on your own. Streisand effect is going into overtime on this one. To that end all those who support Geohot in this case should be spamming any news outlet you can with the story in order for it to more publicly spread. The greater public attention it gets the more Sony will feel the pain and handle it differently next time.
Kreationz's comments really hit the nail there. It's all because of publicity and challenge. But u just gotta know "when" to back down or at least keep ur real identity a secret (like Dark_AleX). But no, geohotz just wants to be known, he loves the attention and he wants people to know his REAL name and how he looks too. He can't stand sitting behind his comp going by a pseudonym. That's ur mistake, and now ur paying the price, dude. If only u didn't reveal ur REAL identity and if only u weren't so eager about the publicity, u wouldnt be in so much trouble.
Now Sony decide to go about the whole thing by suing u, but had sony decided to "pay" u a sum of money to make u stop hacking ps3 instead (like what was rumored about Dark_Alex leaving the psp scene), how would you go about the whole thing? u sure wouldnt condemn sony like u do now, would u?
@Extreme Data: if samsung is suing someone else over something like this, what then? ur going to say "i hope LG steals all samsung's market share"? its all the same with these companies, u just can't side with any of them like that. i mean, if u like a product, fine, go buy it or something, but who asks u to be a "fanboy" of a brand?? (like apple's hardcore fanboys that are all over the place, meh)
The best thing you can do to Sony to return the favor is get your college degree, to get better at hardware hacking, and then send Sony a copy of your diploma, IMO.
I was sued for 5 million. Intellectual Property...... Nothing proven. Ultimately if you get a judgment, you can get wages garnished.... but then you just file chapter 7 bankruptcy ... .yawn ... Lawyers are awesome.
full support, geohot! Freedom of speech, freedom of information, freedom of data.
Hey Sony, if I'd put up a website selling soldering irons along with a description, how to solder stuff to the ps3, would you sue me too? Guess you would.
Never buying Sony again & telling everyone of my friends my opinion bout you. Drop the case then I'll think this over.
hey you had a video quite back about the first exploit 3.21? Do you still have the file because I am hopefully going to work with it but I can't find it anywhere I am a great coder so I can only say you can trust me I hate Sony to as of right now they know what I am saying to you:) But want to know what I wonder? What if any of us coder's were to make a exploit to making the ps3's ram upgradable to make it faster etc stuff like that they will probably first sue then take from you for there own use!

I'm wondering if Sony went into panic mode over the ps3 hack because they were actually infringing on patents.
All I can do is point the finger and laugh. --> hahaha
im not surprised one bit. sony has always tried doing something dumb or dick-ish as a distraction to cover up the real fuck up behind them.

@gearsofmind
i only bought a DS so i could play homebrew (and emulators)
BEFORE PS3 HACK
PSP = Jigkick battery + magic memory stick (but it hacks permanently)
to play homebrew, you simply put it on the memory stick through USB mode then play.
DS = flash card (R4, AceKard) + micro SD (must be used on every boot for homebrew)
to load homebrew, you put the game on the micro SD and put it on the DS
the PSP also has ALOT more homebrew.

Holy shit, you're going to call someone dumb? and have a post with grammatical errors?
Hhahahah that is REALLY funny, if sony is real amazing XDDD

Side note: The more damages they are likely to seek if they win as well...
Well, somebody does win in all lawsuits, and it is always the same: the lawyers!
The outcome is irrelevant, the lawyers always skim the clients.
Your opinion is irrelevant.
The Nintendo 3ds was already hacked on it's release

Sony is a big cry baby, no more Sony Electronics for me. I hope Samsung steals all your market shares!

So much for "unhackable" ps3s though....

the judges are on sony's side since the beginning of the case.
geohot you will lose and have to pay a lot of money for pirating the ps3 or go to jail
There is also word that they might be seized in the US as well since LG petitioned and the ITC has agreed to look into it:
