Life's Good

And recently in Sony news...

Head of "PlayStation brand management" Peter Dille quits. I'd quit too if I saw 6 years of my work getting flushed down the toilet.

Koushik Dutta, creator of the famous Android "ROM Manager" and "ClockworkMod", turned down a job interview with SCEA due to Sony's abuse of the legal system. Props for sticking to your morals. And I quote Koush, "Good, enterprising, devs should never find themselves short of opportunities." True that. Looks like Sony will be stuck with the desperate sell out devs. Don't say you weren't warned.

thats absolutely amazing, i think Koush's statement was amazing, and the fact that he turned down and interview with Sony is starting something revolutionary, seems Sony's not having so many good days today( You know with the lawsuit from LG and that guy quitting), and i just bought a samsung tv instead of a sony today, so that may not do much, but its a start :)

The Xoom has a command like the Nexus One and Nexus S "$fastboot oem unlock" ;) When you unlock the bootloader you can then use commands like "$fastboot flash system system.img" to push custom software. Or a custom recovery that allows flashing roms, and is the most popular route.

Koush is still a awesome developer none the less. He has a custom recovery for every popular Android device, that works with his Android app "Rom Manager". It allows any rooted phone to flash a custom recovery easily, and has a list of developers, roms, themes, ect for download right from your device. Much like a Cydia for Android Rom's to put it simply. Anyway I really was happy to see Koush reply that way SCEA.

The amount of people standing behind you is stunning! It shocks me the things the court allows SCEA to access. All the tinkers and hackers are right behind you on this. I love all technology and don't like any companies sticker better than the other. I try to support devices that allow custom software from the factory as much as possible though. When it comes down to it, the modding community is so small when you look at the big picture. I think the pirates and kiddies hosting modded lobbies hurt the image for modders. People get confused and think we are doing it to be malicious because of this. I buy all my software and games, even though anyone can pirate stuff with a search engine. Still it's not the right thing to do! But people do it, and will if it's available. If your one of the people signing into PSN with a Jailbroken PS3 you are a douche bag and I hope you got banned, because your the type of people that ruin a great thing for everyone. Thanks George for everything and I wish you the best of luck on your legal endeavor.

@Haxazamatic "If your one of the people signing into PSN with a Jailbroken PS3 you are a douche bag and I hope you got banned, because your the type of people that ruin a great thing for everyone."

WTF dude?! That statement is all kinds of fucked up. First of all, not everyone with a jailbroken PS3 creates hacked lobbies and cheats online! Some of us make legit purchases from the psn store and home. I keep telling people, you cant condemn the hackers for what the cheaters do! People were cheating in games WAY before any jailbreak or CFW came along. The homebrew community has done NOTHING to jeopardise anyones psn gaming experience! I know I sure as hell havent, and i have a hacked ps3 too. But im not stupid. I dont cheat online, create hacked lobbies or mess with anyones account. I keep to my own...only chatting with friends, meeting new people on home, and buying things from the psn store. I rarely play online, unless it's with a few close friends of mine, in private matches. So fuck that! I shouldnt have to be condemned a console offline, because some douchebags cheat! Let sony and the devs ban the cheaters. Leave me and mine the hell alone! Some of us woould like to have our cake AND eat it too, jerk!

Surely you can't actually take LG's side? In a previous post you said as much - if it were anyone but Sony you'd be sympathetic (that in itself is slightly hypocrititcal). Obviously Sony are being assbags right now, but that doesn't mean LG also being assbags is actually a good thing.

On another note, the number of people *still* bawwing over at Joystiq right now because they can't get kill streaks in CoD is hilarious. The fact they actually think it's your fault/responsibility, not so much.

How do you know that Peter Dille left Sony for ethical considerations, when it isn't even the first time he left it?

As far as unethical companies go, I fail to see Sony as being so very evil. And I don't mean from the point of view of removing features from their products, but rather, what they do to produce them in the first place.

Oh, and I just want to say that I'm all for homebrew, but you're a douchebag if you pirate games or try to get on PSN with a hacked console. I'm not even going to talk about why piracy sucks, but when you hack your system, you're essentially forfeiting PSN and all the other goodies that come with firmware updates. If you want to use PSN, buy a 2nd PS3 so you'll have a hacked one for homebrew and an unhacked one for online play. Or use those other hack-friendly PSN alternatives that are popping up all over the place. But stop ruining the experience for legit users.

I find it ironic that the treatment of hackers by SCEA has finally bitten them in the ass, and it's well deserved. I highly doubt that any developer(s) with any level of ethics will stoop to working for Sony after the way they have treated people. Koushik Dutta literally sent back the message "we won't forget", if not, "we haven't forgotten".

Honestly at this point it's time for Sony to step down from the scene and bow out with grace rather than risk user backlash and further implodes from the developer community at large.

And if anyone does go to work for Sony, shame on them.

I'm surprised someone hasn't attempted to bring out a gaming console powered by Android OS, Linux, or some other developer friendly system yet.

@Stevan As I stated before a few posts up, when some other jerk mentioned have no right to demand we stay off PSN if we have hacked PS3's. Pirating, as unfortunate as it is, has NO impact on PSN or the PSN community. You can rip games all day...but that doesnt directly affect anyone elses gaming experience on PSN. Online cheating is a different story. You can ban and punish the cheaters, but if were not cheating or directly interfering with anyones gaming experience on PSN,then you have no right to demand that we stay off of it. If I wanna run my homebrew AND have access to PSN, on the same hacked console...and I find a way to do that, you bet your ass, I WILL! And dont bring up the TOS agreement. I believe everyone here pretty much raped the TOS agreement the day they decided to jailbreak or run CFW on their PS3's....obviously, we dont care about TOS. And NO, noone should HAVE to buy another $300 PS3 just to access PSN....go fuck yourself!

Jurisdiction, yep, looks like Sony will win that, but... they are suing the wrong guy. They (falsely)claim his jailbreak was what created the ability to run pirated software. Nope, Backup Manager allowed that back around Sept 9th, 2010 and V2 allowed it without the original disc(true piracy) on Sept 22nd, 2010. One 4 months beforehand and the other still over 3 months beforehand. GeoHotz damage to Sony? Zero, the damage had already been done. (He only allowed brew which was used by others to make earlier hacks more accessible.)

It's like this, a person sneaks into a bank but takes nothing(this first hacker). They look around an leave and tell others how they got in, but warn it's takes certain skills. Others who hear how they did it, run in and grab money(pirates). Now, with they first way still open a second person says, "There's an easier way in than that."(GeoHot). He tells people about it and tells the bank he fix it(never asking for anything in return), and now anyone can walk in and grab what they want and they do....
The first one is who should be sued, but the bank owner can't find them(failoverflow) So they sue the second saying he is responsible for all of it. GeoHot's hack aren't "ruining" your reputation Sony. Your doing that purely on your own.

March 23, 2011 at 6:47 PM
Blogger Kreationz said...

Many of the scene's "hackers" would gladly tell the "hacked" party how to fix their problem for FREE or in exchange for allowing the system to be more open to begin with...

Also never proven as it can't be is the amount of revenue lost. You typical pirate, downloads 100's if not 1000's of pirated items they would have never bought. Arguably the current gen system with the most piracy it the PSP, but Monster Hunter Portable 3rd has sold over 4 Million copies, but there's over 60 Million PSP's that have been sold... wonder what percentage are hacked? Most average people I talk to don't even know it can be hacked or how... So 1/2 are hacked(and that's being generous) and 1/100th have pirated that game and would have bought it... (again likely a generous estimate) Then one 1/200th of 30 million = lost revenue and or about 150k copies with a generous estimate... That's amount to 3.6% of total sales... (Yup, piracy is what killed the PSP not size or craptastic games...)

Note: By Comparison DS has sold over 150 units and it top title sold 26 million copies or about 1/6th total users vs 1/15th total users... (but there's no piracy on the DS right?)

@Shadow You realise that in the same way that your PS3 is yours to hack and customize in any way you want, PSN is Sony's property too, right? Breaking the TOS is not illegal. It just puts you at odds with Sony and denies you access to their products that come with updates. But getting into PSN with a hacked console IS unauthorized access. I thought we were fighting for our legal rights here. You say Sony has no jurisdiction over your console, yet you break in and illegally use Sony's property. You cry over the violation of your own rights, yet go ahead and violate those of others. You're a hypocrite of the most disgusting calibre. Now you go fuck yourself.

@Stevan Youre exactly right, steve. But like I said, (I dont speak for everyone) but sony's TOS agreement became worthless to us and invalid, the day sony decided to remove OtherOS. Wheather we agree to it or not, means nothing more than the toilet paper we wipe with. When sony removed OtherOS, there was nothing in the TOS agreement at the time, that indicated we werent allowed to run an open source linux OS while connected to PSN. Yet, they came out and even said in a press conference last year "we have no intention of removing OtherOS support from all pre existing PS3 models" then shortly after that, issue a firmware update with a nice little message that said the equivelant of "Keep OtherOS and lose PSN, or keep PSN and lose you wish to update?" Now, at that time, running a linux OS while connected to PSN did absolutely NOTHING to either directly or indirectly harm anyone's PS3, or online gaming experience on PSN. There was never, nor has there EVER been a threat to anyone, connecting to PSN while running a linux OS. Those people....lost theyre rights to PSN, on that day....for those reasons. All legalities was just as wrong of Sony to block PSN from linux users a year ago, as it is to block CFW users from PSN now. We ARE fighting for our rights, steve. Our consumer rights. The right to use the merchandise we pay for in any way we see fit, WITHOUT the restrictions of TOS agreements, software licenses, and DMCA rights. Are you on board, or not? o_O

"©Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Licensed for play on the PLAYSTATION®3 Computer Entertainment System or authorized PLAYSTATION®3 format systems. For full terms and conditions see the user's manual."

Seems that everybody except SCEA thinks this thing is a computer.
