Yeah unhackable ps3 lol. Ok so they are going to spend even more money they shouldn't then entice all hackers to give it a go, even ones that normally wouldn't but can't refuse a challenge. I feel perhaps with some hardware changes they will also use some kind of software that if and when it detects some unusual activity it will autobrick itself. Being the electronics giant they are, they know nothing is unhackable so it's odd they would even attempt it... and to spend the money they could focus on later products is just really odd behavior. I also feel that their race to the courtrooms is born by some kind of insecurity they feel about infrigements on their part being discovered. The whole situation is just odd and because of their actions will cost the company a good portion of the profits they would otherwise be receiving. Oh well I'm looking forward to purely playing pc games and paying companies for products I believe in, like ati/amd...etc. Perhaps if there is ever a shortage of ps3's in the EU I'll sell my ps3 for a good amount to someone there.

The algorithm sony uses signs public key blue ray games for the ps3s with a unique private key was faulty. Instead of generating a random number, they used a constant (in this case 4) which allows hackers to create a program that runs the algorithm in reverse until they get a key that would create every single public key. Since they didnt successfully implement the algorithm, what would have taken X^9 (years) amount of time to figure out, now only takes perhaps a week for a computer to calculate.

@rogerdodger91 thats the 2nd part of getting the keys, the first part is exploiting the loader, which fail0verflow did by... well I'm not sure I should put that here, but they did reveal how they exploited lv2ldr in their presentation. That George used the same crypto vulnerability is known, but the way he exploited metldr to be able to in the first place he will never tell.

I would guess it has to do with the way sony's ps3 checks for authorized programs/hardware. Something to do with that is how you got it. :)

I wonder if it would be illegal to point out how to get the key rather than actually posting. Does Sony hold the rights to the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm? Probably not I'm guessing. It's a flaw in it's hardware implementation that allows you to literally use "fairly simple" algebra to reverse it.
Now that I think of it, Sony's war on piracy never ever brought them anything good. They managed to keep the ps3 pirate-proof for a good 3 years and so what? They sell less hardware and "software" than ps2, xbox 360, wii, all of which are wide open to piracy.

I don't think he was planning on making it public, since from what he says the exploit is fixable. So he probably wanted some deal where he told them how to fix it in exchange for getting back an official way to run homebrew.

All in all George, you know the public has your back and Sony isn't going to have any good press or standing after this. We all know they should have supported Homebrew applications and development, Linux, and kept support for legacy systems.

The new "unhackable" one is likely them adding a Pre-IPL like they did on the the 3K/Go... there are still no new full CFW for them yet. Exploits that allow other stuff to be ran will likely continue though. Nothing is "unhackable" at least not with enough time and resources.

lol at sony producing a new move program that allows pc applications for the device. Basically following microsoft's open drivers...however there is a catch where you install the program on a ps3 and it sends the move controller data over lan to a pc. So a researcher has to buy the move controller, camera and a ps3!

Nintendo has some weird requirement for Indie/Garage: Inorder to develop aps on the system you must have an office. I just want to develop from my bedroom, with my friends.
Any chance of hacking it so that we can use the full potential of the system?
I'd like to see him or anyone do this for the trial... just to smash Sony's face in it... and prove the PS3 is nothing more than a cheap PC built around a RISC CPU. Really that's all it is...
Take the Firmware, customize it down, and turn it into a simple BIOS/CMOS like a PC's does and then program in a Linux installation to the HDD to act as a fully update capable and maintainable software based replacement for the XrossBar for file, game save, and other device management. Have it run on the Hypervisor with full hardware acceleration and capabilities.
@vuno C++ would definitely be the best direction as with C++ or even C for that matter the programming language can be transferable across any OS and platform.
Still I'd like to see a software based jailbreak like Half-Byte Loader arrive for the Official Firmware to perform actions like OtherOS loading and maybe even properly and accurately done software based support of Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 games.
Basic knowledge of assembly would be needed while coding too. We try to code in pure C++ but sometimes assembly needs to be there. My nature language is assembly and my second language is C++.

Hey George IF Sony does offer to settle give them this list of demands or else don't settle, or else add this in the countersuit:
1. OtherOS must be restored and the Hypervisor unlocked for Linux and X11/OpenGL.
2. All future PS3s sold must contain the GS+EE hardware for backwards compatibility with PS1 & 2 software, and all current sold and/or marketed PS3s must be recalled to receive a replacement model with hardware based compatibility restored.
3. An official SDK for homebrew developers must be released by Sony that not only allows applications to be coded for the PS3, but must allow access by the software to the Hypervisor for hardware acceleration benefits from the Nvidia RSX GPU, but must also maintain DRM and anti-piracy regulations.
4. The PS3 must continually be supported and produced as well as all features listed above for at least 5 years post-date of verdict/settlement on an official basis.
5. The PS3 can not be altered in anyway by design or production that removes any previously listed above or said features from the system.
6. Sony must issue a public media release apology to all users as well as a public apology to all persons they have brought legal action against and excuse themselves from any further legal issues against current non-piracy homebrew, system development, and system analysis based efforts and offer restitution from $750,000 or 750,000€ up to $1,500,000 or 1,500,000€ to any wrongfully accused persons or groups affected by this ruling that was ruled liable in previous cases and said cases must be overturned, withdrawn, dismissed, or reconciled without prejudice.
7. Sony must pay $5,000,000 to charities of their choice to promote scholarships, student grants, and other educational funding for advanced education in technical fields.
And that's just a good start from my lil' ol' brain...

Blocking cheat devices and cheat software isn't the same as supporting software development for legit usage of applications for the PS3 like adding PDF Readers, emulators, and other software applications for general usage.
George, over at groklaw I read that you have to give up your decryption keys for your hard drives? How are they getting you to do this?
@Dave - With the right knowledge it still decryptable/hackable which Sony can't fix, but they can limit the amount of hacking to those like Geohot who have the right knowledge.
my guess, protection has to expose a means for the protection to work, thus anything that uses the key has it, it is in the pup file just after the header in raw hex (oh, no, now sony has a reason to sue because I have a brain and know how to use it and know how to hack sonic games) and yes all versions of the firmware pup files have it, otherwise the pup would be declined because it is unsigned. I discovered this myself by checking a key against a pup and found the byte sequence in it in plain sight. just use xvi32 to find it ya fools!
I can get you the 3.56 key any time I want to, but I won't because I am against the 3.56 update completely and would be for a complete removal of playstation network because psn is now officially crap and because I hate firmware 3.56, I will only give the key if more than 75% of you all are stuck on that firmware without a means to downgrade, as many of you as possible stay with 3.55 or below, people stop using psn, and that it is not used to pirate games, if anyone uses it for that, the next firmware will not be hacked by me, period, you will be on your own.

Seriously... it's a demo. They obviously have tons of recovery disks they can use to restore it.
You could always walk by the stack of PS3s and "accidentally" knock them over and then fall onto the boxes hopefully crushing everything inside, or stomping them while "attempting" to regain your balance.
It's either than or find a way to blast PS3s with electromagnetic fields to scramble their internal circuits.

Sony in big trouble with LG
Sony's shipments of PlayStation 3 consoles to Europe, now impounded by customs. An ongoing dispute with technology firm LG is the cause.
These are busy days for Sony now. Ever since the Japanese game company decided to sue the Korean technology company LG in December last year on a number of patents in LG's mobile phones are the dark clouds piled up.
Serious consequences
LG decided namely to respond with its own atmosphere, in effect, four patents that they believe that Sony bypassed in the development of Blu-Ray player included in all PlayStation 3 consoles.
Something which has got some very serious consequences. LG has won a preliminary injunction, which means that all PlayStation 3 consoles shipped to Europe in the next few weeks stopped at customs, according to The Guardian.
The brackets may be destroyed
Tens of thousands of consoles were confiscated last week in the Netherlands, where a large part of Sony's products are shipped before being passed on into Europe. Usually, importing over 100 000 Sony PlayStation 3 in the week. The consoles that are out there in stores are considered to last for two to three weeks. Sony struggling desperately to get the court order is suspended from the European Patent Office. LG has a chance to get it extended.
About LG wins his goal will Sony have to pay damages for all the PlayStation 3 consoles already sold, which could mean billions of dollars. Another possible measure is that the consoles that customs confiscated destroyed.
What do you think about your fellow devs running scared while you bare the weight of a community, and now math says he has keys but will never release them. If I know what I was doing I'd be right next to ya cause I believe when I buy something I can do whatever whenever I want with it and to it. Personally I'll never buy another Sony product even when you do win this suit. @Brian you shouldn't be looking for the 3.56 private keys, you can't calculate the new ones (Yes they did fix their signing app and do use a real random number now), you shouldn't even be looking at the ecdsa checking code, that one is secure, it's always been.

I still don't get why jailbreaking the iPhone is supported under the DMCA, yet the PS3 is not.

Anyways, I came across some pretty nice info recently. Apparently, for those who dont know...Sony never removed OtherOS for security reasons. It was all done for financial purposes. They just used security reasons so they could play on the wording, and justify it by the recent hacking on the PS3. 3.56 is not unhackable. It's just that Geohot has been enjoined from doing it.
3.60 does seem to be a different beast, though. They actually redid the chain of trust, and kept the private keys secure for real this time.

@clcancellation : 3.60 is hackable but it will likely take 4 years like the 1st jailbreak of the ps3. not only has sony put major security on it, getting rid of the loaders, but on top of that they're suing the major hackers. have you noticed that no one's been able to jailbreak 3.56 so far ? what will happen is that the ps3 hacking scene will be dying a slow death.
btw geohot is not the only hacker. actually he shamelessly took credit for failoverflow's work when he released the root key (he had better not when we see that sony is suing him LOLLLL)

Stick to the line that you have never accepted the EULA and you should be safe and sound. Whatever you have done with the hardware or software, you have no agreement with them to NOT do anything. As the key is baked, it doesn't matter what version firmware was on it, so you could still be on 1.0. It wasn't a smart move to post too much information, but this is the information age. It is not the information that ruines markets for companies, it is the people that use it (as said: if you are responsible for people to misuse the information you provided, then Sony is responsible for giving you the means to do so, ie. selling the darn thing).
First they fight to say it is a computer then decided to fight the other way when they change their mind and their original assertion affects their bottom dollar in the wrong way.

The UK courts decided the PS2 was not a computer because it wasn't "freely programmable". The PS3 was long asserted by Sony as computer from it's early days. Now they use more ambiguous terms like, "It only does everything." Well currently it doesn't do Linux.
This is like Sony arguing a truck is no longer a truck because they stole they bed off the once's they sold when it was clearly sold as a truck. Carrying things in the bed may not have been the primary purpose (that is driving it from place to place), but I bet truck owners would be angry if one of the big three issued a mandatory recall of the truck beds or a loss of their warranty.

Thank you so much for that link Snake I was trying really hard to find some good in his "hard work". Only issue is now is that the pirates out number the legit homebrew users. And I don't hate his (george hotz)ego is what got him here in the first place, there is no denying that.
Also I find all the internet gangstas that keep the most noise didn't even donate to his cause they just hopped on to pirate. If you thought I came here looking to "hate" you're wrong as a average user I can't see nothing but piracy. What you legit users need to do is bring the good to the front and push all the bad further back. It's not just sony. You will find this type of irrational behavior in ALL "big time" multi billion dollar corporations. Microsoft, apple, sony, nintendo, wal-mart, etc...these companies only care about one thing, same thing they have ALWAYS cared about....Money and profit. As long as theyre making money, and a profit off of you and me, they could care less about our consumer rights or any other right for that matter. We the people, have had the collective power to put these businesses under...if enough of us would just boycott their products and services. Pfffffft, yeah right! We all talk about it, but noone ever does it. Fact is, our society has become entirely dependant and spoiled on these businesses and establishments, as well as their "oh-so-cool" products. This is not just seen in the business world, but all around us, in government, politics and religion. These people have all the power and all the cards....and WE give it to em.
